Quality and Safety Fellowship - David Blom Administrative Campus

The Accelerated Quality/Safety Fellowship is a 6-month hybrid program that accepts up to twenty OhioHealth providers each year. Over the course of this fellowship, you will be equipped with practical knowledge and skills in quality improvement and patient safety. As a fellow, you will become empowered to lead meaningful change in any medical setting, including leadership and faculty roles.

Program Structure

Didactic Sessions: Delivered via a hybrid of in-person and live virtual classes running for roughly 4 hours bi-weekly over a 6-month period (totaling 12 interactive sessions).

Core Curriculum: Covers high reliability organization (HRO) principles, leadership, health system operations, and faculty development.

Capstone: Participants must complete a practical capstone project aligned with OhioHealth safety and quality priorities.

Requirements and Eligibility
  • Must be an OhioHealth-affiliated physician (MD/DO), pharmacist (PharmD), or advanced practice provider (APP/PA) who has completed an accredited residency or professional training program.
  • Requires departmental approval to ensure protected time for project engagement and coursework.
  • Attend the first in-person session on 10/13/26 (welcome, intros, QI essentials).
  • Attend the last in-person session on 4/6/27 (project presentations, graduation).
  • Attend at least two of the other four in-person workshops (11/10/26, 12/15/26, 1/19/27, 3/2/27).
  • Attend at least six of the eight online classes. Session recordings will be available for credit towards up to two missed sessions because of work-related absences.
  • Must complete a QI capstone project and present results on 4/6/27.
General Information
  • The fellowship will start on October 13, 2026 and end on April 6, 2027.
  • There will be a total of twelve didactic sessions over 6 months.
  • The sessions are scheduled every other Thursday from 1 PM to 5 PM.
  • The fellowship has adopted a blended learning model that combines six in-person sessions and six live online classes. The in-person sessions are intended to promote a collaborative learning community while the live virtual classes reduce travel time and encourage distance learning.
  • Six in-person sessions will be held about once monthly at the BAC. The dates are 10/13/26, 11/10/26, 12/15/26, 1/19/27, 3/2/27, and 4/6/27.
  • Six online classes will be hosted on teams. The dates are 10/27/26, 12/1/26, 1/5/27, 2/2/27, 2/6/27, and 3/16/27.

Rotation Opportunities

Your core curriculum will include work in the following areas:

  • Improvement science
  • Quality improvement
  • Patient safety
  • Health system operations
  • Leadership
  • Faculty development

Fellows who take a deeper dive into faculty development will:

  • Learn teaching skills and curriculum design, implementation and evaluation.
  • Teach residents and mentor their quality improvement and patient safety projects to completion.
  • Complete the OhioHealth Junior Faculty Development course.

Fellows who take a deeper dive into leadership training will:

  • Attend hospital and system quality improvement and patient safety committee meetings, clinical guidance councils, kaizen events, safety rounds, conferences and Medical Operation Team meetings.
  • Complete the OhioHealth Physician Leadership Academy.

Wellness

We believe that wellness and resilience are imperative to being an effective physician. Riverside Methodist is a national leader in the provider wellness field. We regularly use the Mayo Clinic’s Well-Being Index to identify and address burnout and distress, provide a format for reflective groups, and offer proactive meetings with our Physician Health and Wellness group to help you manage stress.
